Sacramento Climate Heroes:
Bustamantes Go Car-Free!!

The Bustamantes have been working all year toward this goal: they are now car-free! The family of four (children ages 4 and 1) got a cargo bike in March and began to explore the limits of family biking. Their car sat on the street for days on end until, finally, they sold it in October to pursue a healthier and happier lifestyle. Each car costs approximately $5000/year so the lack of a car frees up that much money. When necessary the Bustamantes can afford to take a zip car, taxi, or train (or can borrow a parent’s or friend’s car), but for day-to-day errands and local trips the bike is their vehicle of choice. See the story of the family’s transition to car-free at Tinyhelmetsbigbikes.com. According to the website, from March 1 to December 2 they rode 2955 miles, saved $1773, and avoided 1433.2 pounds of C02 emissions. True climate heroes!

Tip of the Week: Do I Really Need to Drive?

Each time you go out, ask yourself the simple question, “Is there a more energy efficient way to get there?” Once you start exploring the alternatives you’ll find many: walking, biking, light rail, bus, carpooling, train, sometimes even a phone call can take the place of a car trip. Give yourself a big “Attaboy!” (or another treat) each time you are able to leave the car at home.
