Tip of the Week: Program Your Thermostat
Programmable thermostats can potentially save a lot of energy and money by reducing your heat use at night or when you’re gone from home. However, they only work if you set them. If all that fancy technology seems overwhelming, ask a friend or teenage neighbor to help. |

Sacramento Climate Heroes: Fischer Family Teaching Good Stewardship
"Our family is trying to make a contribution to helping heal our environment and clean up our community in some small, easily repeatable ways. We have three children and want to not only leave them a healthier planet but also help guide them in their stewardship by showing them that environmentalism is made up of myriad little ideas and tasks that can be fun and educational, not heavy-handed."
"In our home, we:
-Conserve our washing machine usage and try to get good use out of our clothes between washings -Use our heating and air conditioning sparingly -Use ceiling fans for cooling -Dress in layers during the fall and winter instead of blasting our furnace (the kids love bundling up!) -Open doors and windows to naturally ventilate the house, taking advantage of the nice Delta breezes -Use a clothesline and drying racks whenever we can -Utilize cloth diapers -Recycle our children's art supplies, use both sides of paper sheets, and print on recycled and/or scratch paper -Make our own laundry detergent that is environmentally safe
-Buy organic and local produce and make our own baby food"
"In our community, we:
-Use our bicycles whenever possible to run errands, get out of the house, and take the kids to school -Take advantage of local Farmers' Markets and neighborhood stores
-Go for neighborhood walks and pick up litter (which our little girls love)" |

"We've been pleasantly surprised to see that our older children (ages 4 and 5) can find all kinds of way to have fun while saving fossil fuels and electricity, too. They love bike riding, walking, and going to the park. They watch one video with Mom & Dad a week and do not complain about a lack of television, even though they're both in school with kids who talk about TV and movies quite a lot. They adore making art and playing pretend with their dress-up clothes. Even on daylong, cross-state car trips to see family they can be easily entertained with coloring books and nonelectronic '80's-era toys like MagnaDoodles and ViewMasters. Their imaginations are boundless and they seem to be in no rush to 'plug-in'."
